Medals Policy & Procedures

Latest Amendment/Approval Date: October 2023

1. Purpose

1.1 This policy is intended to guide the Academic Board in its awarding of the College Medal and Honours Medal by specifying the requirements of each award.

2. Scope

2.1 This policy applies to eligible undergraduate students who have completed either the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts or the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts (Honours)

2.2 Students who have met the requirements of a Diploma or a postgraduate qualification are not eligible for nomination.

3. Principles

3.1 These awards recognise outstanding academic performance by students completing Campion’s undergraduate bachelors degrees.

4. Policy

Part A – College Medal

4.1 Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration, a student must:

  • be graduating from the Campion College Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts;
  • have completed at least two thirds of the units required for the course as a student enrolled at Campion College;
  • have completed the final semester at Campion College (that is, not as study abroad);
  • have an average mark of at least 85 across all second and third year units studied,
  • have demonstrated that they possess the Campion College Graduate Attributes (see appendix for criteria and table for comparative assessments).

4.2 Nominated Candidate

4.2.1 The nominated candidate for the College Medal is the person with the highest weighted average mark of any eligible candidates.

4.2.2 The weighted average mark (WAM) is determined by assessing the mark (e.g. 68; 73) received in each unit in the course to determine an average. It is calculated using the following formula:

WAM = Sum of (credit points for unit x mark)
Sum of credit points attempted

4.2.3 The final weighted average mark is then rounded to the nearest integer.

4.3 Determining the Recipient

4.3.1 When determining the recipient, the Academic Board will take into account the undergraduate performance in second and third year units in the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts.

4.3.2 Only units of study offered as part of the BA in second and third year will be factored into calculations of the weighted average mark.

4.3.3 There will normally be only one College Medal recipient per year, other than in exceptional circumstances, such as in the instance of a tied result. In such circumstances, however, the Academic Board may choose to take into further account results from above-load units and the candidates’ demonstration of the Campion College Graduate Attributes.

4.3.4 Where no student meets the criteria for consideration, the Academic Board will not award the College Medal for that year.

Part B – Honours Medal

4.4 Eligibility
4.4.1 To be eligible for consideration, a student must:

  • be graduating from the Campion College Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts (Honours);
  • have completed at least two thirds of the units required for the course as a student enrolled at Campion College;
  • be receiving the Honours award at the highest level, Class 1;
  • have achieved a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 85;
  • have demonstrated that they possess the Campion College Graduate Attributes (see appendix for criteria and table for comparative assessments).

4.5 Nominated Candidate

4.5.1 The nominated candidate for the Honours Medal will have achieved the highest weighted average mark of any eligible candidates.

4.5.2 There will normally be only one Honours Medal recipient per year, other than in exceptional circumstances, such as in the instance of a tied result. In such circumstances, however, the Academic Board may choose to take into further account, in equal measure:

  • the candidates’ demonstration of the Campion College Graduate Attributes, and
  • the thesis examiners’ reports and comments on the candidates’ level of academic excellence.

4.5.3 Where no student meets the criteria for consideration, the Academic Board will not award the College Medal for that year.

4.5.4 The weighted average mark (WAM) is determined in accordance with the Honours Policy and the formula enclosed in 4.2 of the current policy.

4.5.5 The final weighted average mark is then rounded to the nearest integer.

5. Procedures

5.1 The Academic Board will assess all eligible nominations and is the final authority for the awarding of a Medal.

5.2 The Academic Board reserves the right not to award a College Medal or Honours Medal should there be no eligible candidates.

5.3 The College Medal and Honours Medal will be awarded to the recipients at the earliest possible graduation ceremony or in absentia.

5.4 All nominations shall remain confidential. Students must not be informed of any nominations.

5.5 Appeals can only be made on the basis that the Academic Board did not follow due process. Appeals are decided according to the Academic Grievance Policy and Procedures.

6. Roles and Responsibilities

6.1 The Academic Board is responsible for assessing the eligibility of candidates and awarding the College Medal.

6.2 The Dean of Studies is responsible for providing the Academic Board with all relevant information regarding eligible nominations.
